    Last Epoch recently announced its 2026 roadmap and news of its new expansion, Orobyss. As one of the most beloved ARPGs outside of Path of Exile and Diablo, Last Epoch's latest roadmap has left players dissatisfied.

    This is primarily due to a change in ownership of Last Epoch development team and a shift in its monetization strategy, and the latest roadmap even shows pay-to-win elements.

    Change Of Company Ownership

    Initially, the developers promised players that all content would be updated for free after a one-time buyout, hoping to sustain operations through microtransactions. However, financial data from three consecutive seasons showed that this model was absolutely not working.

    Therefore, Last Epoch's leaders faced three choices: sell the company, cease development, or change their monetization strategy.

    The final result was predictable: in July 2025, the developers sold Last Epoch to a multi-billion dollar multinational gaming company for $96 million. Since the initial promise of a free-to-play model was made by the development team, but the decision-making body has now shifted to its parent company, their marketing strategy has changed as seen in the 2026 roadmap.

    However, while the parent company adheres to an AI-first strategy, Last Epoch development team stated that their development will not be affected.

    2026 Roadmap

    The official announcement states that Orobyss Expansion will be free for players who already own the PC version before the expansion's release. For new players and PlayStation 5 players, Orobyss Expansion will be bundled with the game.

    The expansion is expected to release later in 2026, coinciding with the PS5 version. Prior to the expansion, the game will proceed as planned with Season 4 in early 2026 and Season 5 in mid-2026.

    The development team plans to shorten season intervals, expand the team, and improve development tools to accelerate content updates, but promises not to sacrifice quality.

    This roadmap has clearly angered players, as it only shows the completed Season 3, the upcoming Season 4 and 5, and an expansion with undisclosed details.

    It lacks any specific details about features, content updates, or timelines, a stark contrast to the detailed feature plans previously provided in update previews. This has led some players to question whether these features have been abandoned or converted into non-free content.

    Furthermore, compared to Path of Exile series, which has undergone nearly three league transitions in this period, Last Epoch has made no moves other than updating the roadmap. Even Season 4 has been pushed back to early 2024 to avoid clashing with POE 2 patch 0.4.0. This clearly indicates a lack of confidence. Perhaps Last Epoch is hesitant to compete with POE 2's Druids.

    Paradox Classes

    Paradox classes are the focus of controversy in this announcement. They are defined as completely independent playable classes with different operating systems.

    The first Paradox Class will be released with an expansion pack and sold as non-free downloadable content. The development team describes it as experimental content designed to explore new gameplay.

    This contradicts the official promise, as they had previously stated they would not charge for expansion packs or new classes; the change in ownership has reversed this policy. On the other hand, the experimental descriptions made players feel like they were paying to test the game.

    The main concern was class balance, as players worried that Paradox classes might be significantly stronger than free classes, creating a situation where paying meant becoming overpowered. This wasn't unprecedented, and Diablo 4's Spiritborn was excessively powerful upon release, and even in recent seasons, it has remained one of the best classes.

    Is Monetization A Bad Thing?

    The Dilemma Facing Last Epoch

    For players, it's definitely not a good thing, because pay-to-win isn't a healthy phenomenon for a game. But for Last Epoch, there doesn't seem to be a better path. Last Epoch's in-game microtransactions are completely incomparable to Path of Exile or even Diablo 4.

    Some players described Last Epoch's in-game shop as a soft monetization scheme, and indeed, it has virtually no presence. It mainly offers cosmetic items, but the quality is nowhere near that of Diablo 4, so few players take money on them.

    On the other hand, the demand for player-to-player trading is very low. Except at the beginning of the season when trading Last Epoch gold and items becomes more frequent, most players can solo the main game content because the loot drop rate is much better than in Path of Exile.

    Therefore, its parent company cannot allow them to continue operating the game in this way, as it's simply losing money without new player acquisition. Monetization is therefore inevitable.

    What Can Paradox Classes Bring?

    However, we can still expect the development team to maintain ethical standards and not intentionally make non-free classes too powerful to force players to unlock them. Furthermore, their past design of systems and skill trees has been excellent, making Paradox Class something to look forward to.

    As for the experimental content mentioned by the official team, it will undergo internal testing before release, so this word may be overinterpreted. It's more likely to represent a class with entirely new gameplay and background, rather than a classic class like the knight or Necromancer that appears in many games.

    Furthermore, only a powerful and compelling new Paradox Class can generate sustained revenue for Last Epoch and ensure the game's survival. Poor sales of the expansion might lead to a lack of follow-up expansions, ultimately causing the game to stop updating or even cease development of Last Epoch 2.

    Successful sales of Paradox Class could prove the viability of this expansion and mid-season non-free class model, providing a stable cash flow for the game's long-term operation.

    As the first major expansion for Last Epoch, Orobyss isn't available for free, so you can decide whether to try it after more details are released.

    How To Prepare For The New Expansion?

    While Orobyss is expected to introduce many new gameplay features, most of the key mechanics aren't expected to differ significantly from the base game.

    Last Epoch sets the world of Eterra, where you'll travel through different eras, gaining powers and weapons through adventures to defeat the powerful machinations of Orobyss and stop him.

    During this journey, you'll need to use special items called Epochs to travel through time and space and complete challenges to enter the endgame. The endgame system, Monoliths, will then transport you to a doomed timeline, where you'll have to make your final decision.

    You can play the game solo or with friends. Last Epoch offers five base classes, each with three customizable masteries and unique skill trees, allowing you to experience over 120 skills across 15 different class playstyles.

    Last Epoch has been undergoing ongoing fixes since the new season began. Released on August 28th, 1.3.1 addresses numerous skill and monster issues and adds new content. Here are the highlights of this hotfix.

    Last Epoch Hotfix 1.3.1 Overview: What Skills And Enemies Have Been Adjusted?

    Skill Fixes

    Skill Anomaly Fixes

    • Tempest Maw: Summoned Storm Sprites were not exploding upon death.
    • Fury Leap: When assigned a Pack Leader node, summoned sabertooth tigers would leap toward enemies and then teleport back to the player.
    • Dark Quiver: Until Dawn node was not triggering when using skills with non-bow attacks but with Bow tag added from other sources.
    • Elemental Nova: Crest of Unity's elemental penetration effect only worked when Infernal Prism node was assigned.
    • Summon Skeletal Mage: In online mode, changing zones should now properly summon all enabled mage types, resolving an issue that previously required re-logging.
    • Runebolt: Runebolt failed to provide Rah for Runic Invocation if Immutable Order node was not assigned and Runebolt had not yet been cast.
    • Entangling Roots: The unlit Cold icon would not appear in the skill panel if Winternid Thorns node was not assigned.
    • Serpent Strike: The unlit Cold icon would not appear in the skill panel if Frostwyrm's Fury node was not assigned.
    • Summon Spriggan: The unlit Cold icon would not appear in the skill panel when Branches of Winter node was not assigned.
    • Summon Raptor: When possessing multiple Raptors summoned by Naal's Tooth item, assigning skill tree nodes would cause some Raptors to be unexpectedly unsummoned.
    • Devouring Orb: Void Adept node was not working at double the effect at exactly 90 Vitality (previously required 91 or higher).
    • Volatile Reversal: The flame visual effect would remain after the skill's flame conversion.
    • Dive Bomb: After using a skill, Raptor would sometimes briefly reappear at its previous location before teleporting to the skill's target location.
    • Dread Shade: After assigning Egoism node, Vile Ghast node would not be assigned, despite being linked in the skill tree.
    • Lightning Blast: Cloud Answer's chance to apply Spark Charge on hit with Lightning Blast sub-skills (such as Spark Nova) was not working. Mortal Capacitor Issues that do not affect skill tooltip DPS.

    Skill Visual Fixes

    • Bone Curse visual errors.
    • Assemble Abomination tail attack animation errors.
    • Summon Skeleton skill's skeleton archer animation timing errors.
    • Forgemaster Passive Tree shield visual errors.
    • Summoned Death Knight's cape clipping errors.
    • Avalanche boulder and blood textures displaying incorrectly at different levels.
    • Flay skill damage estimation errors.

    Item Changes

    This fix primarily does not affect item and resource issues, so Last Epoch gold values of various equipment and weapons will be largely unaffected.

    Besides visual fixes for Carrion of Creation, Tyrant's Skull, Hydra Arc, and Carcinization of Momentum, Evolution's End now properly triggers the summon Rift Beast effect on minions, as well as Chorus of Anurok no longer counts allies that exceed the maximum number of allies towards its effects.

    Item, Enemy And Affix Adjustments

    Some enemy adjustments focus on visuals, death animations, and audio fixes. Siege Golems and Soul Cages have had their attack visuals adjusted, while Anurok and T-Rex minions have had their sounds adjusted to differentiate them from their enemy counterparts. Several boss attack indicators have also been adjusted.

    Several enemy abilities have had their abilities or damage adjusted, with some enemies and items receiving buffs and others receiving nerfs:

    Nerfs

    • Ice Bats: Ice cone attack base damage decreased and accuracy reduced.
    • Rotsteel Nemesis: Venom projectiles are now more dispersed, and their spinning attack is less accurate and slower.
    • Drowned Raven: Projectile attack movement speed decreased and damage radius reduced.
    • Blood Serpents: Blood projectile size significantly reduced.
    • Draal Lava Carriers: Lava breath accuracy decreased and base damage reduced (damage increases gradually with duration).
    • Champions with the Profane affix: Breath of the Dead damage reduced, projectiles reduced, and slower.
    • Ghost (Frozen Wolf Champion): All skill damage significantly reduced.
    • Radamosa the Cursed: Tail slash and melee attack damage significantly reduced; Teleport explosion radius slightly reduced, with a longer delay (but explosion damage significantly increased); Sky Beam damage per tick reduced.
    • Ord Lorca: Tail attack no longer acts as a shotgun.
    • Haruspex Orian: Tail attack no longer acts as a shotgun.
    • Void Slashes: Agile Harbinger no longer acts as a shotgun.
    • Void Beam: Void Beam base damage reduced (damage increases gradually over time to its current value).
    • Harbinger of Defilement: Tail attack no longer acts as a shotgun.

    Buffs

    • Bone Sculptors: Now occasionally summons a much larger zombie.
    • Immortal Chimera: Breath attack is no longer dodgable.
    • Woven Husks: Taunt frequency significantly reduced, actual attack frequency increased.
    • Forge Soldier: Explosive orb damage increased (but takes longer to reach the target).
    • Infernal Husks: Flamethrower damage now increases gradually over its duration (base damage unchanged).
    • Immortal Eyes: All attack damage significantly increased, health significantly increased, explosion occurs slightly earlier.
    • Soul Cage: Soul release damage increased, hitboxes more accurately aligned with visuals.
    • Desecrated Flesh: Non-rotating skill damage increased.
    • Siege Golems: Durability significantly increased.
    • Fateweavers: Lachesis, Atropos, Clotho: Slightly increased health and damage.
    • T-Rexes: Significant damage reduction while roaring.

    Unfixed Issues

    While this hotfix addresses many issues, some remain unfixed. For example, Wildfire Embers' uniform spread was affected, and totems were unable to automatically lock onto Spires in the Monolith, requiring manual targeting. and memory leaks in certain situations.

    What Are The New Gameplays?

    The new features primarily focus on new chapters, enemy types, and items. By exploring new content, you can farm Last Epoch gold and unlock new items, empowering you to enhance your character and experience even more combat fun.

    New Content From Chapter 10

    This chapter picks up where Chapter 9 left off. After the battle with Majasa, you'll continue your journey through the dense jungles of ancient times and locations previously visible only in ruins. Witness key events that shaped Eterra's devastated future as you pursue Apophis.

    In Chapter 10, you'll experience 17 new campaign areas and 28 new enemies, as well as numerous variants of existing enemies that randomly appear in other game areas, including those in Chapter 10. Six new monolith echo zones have also been added:

    • Serene Isles
    • Nightbloom Forest
    • Mushroom Caves
    • Crystal Lakes
    • Sky Garden
    • Tidal Sands

    To encourage you to complete this chapter as quickly as possible, completing Chapter 10 will grant you an additional +1 to all character attributes, which stacks with the bonuses from completing Chapter 9. This is one of the most effective ways to boost your character development in the early stages of Season 3.

    New Enemies From Mysterious Rifts

    After completing Chapter 10 and entering the campaign zone and Monolith of Fate Echoes, you may encounter Mysterious Rifts. Using one will transport you back to ancient times and place you outside the entrance to a new cavernous side area.

    These caves are actually new side areas. At the cave entrance, the friendly NPC Skarven Bloodhorn, the Wengari Hunt Master, will speak with you, explaining the caverns and assisting you in your exploration.

    Once inside, you'll find many new Last Epoch enemies from the ancient past. Defeating them will earn you a new currency called Ancient Bones, which you can trade with Skarven for additional items.

    Note that at the end of each cave lies a Rift Beast guarding its lair. These powerful boss enemies possess a variety of traits and abilities, and they evolve during the encounter.

    Defeating a Rift Beast not only grants you Ancient Bones, but also gold, Primordial materials, and occasionally a Primordial Unique - the drop rate depends on the boss's evolution count.

    Furthermore, after defeating a Rift Beast, you can choose to continue evolving Rift Beast lineage or end it entirely. Choosing to evolve will grant all bosses in the lineage new traits and loot, as well as at least one required Primordial material.

    What Are Torn Rifts?

    After evolving a Rift Beast, if you haven't completed the lineage, you'll encounter Torn Rifts. These encounters will lead to an ambush by a Rift Beast from the current lineage.

    However, if you defeat two to four Rift Beasts from Torn Rifts, the next encounter will revert to Mysterious Rifts, allowing you to return to Ancient Era and complete the quest by evolving Rift Beast again or ending the lineage.

    Each completed lineage grants you a non-primordial unique item called Evolution's End. Once you've reached the maximum number of evolutions, the next time you defeat a Rift Beast in a cave, you'll end your current lineage and begin a new one.

    New Items

    First, to fully expand your Season 3 combat and build crafting options, Last Epoch introduces 30 unique items, including 5 Standard Uniques and 25 Primordial Uniques. Many existing unique items have also received functional updates.

    In addition to new gameplay modes like Mysterious Rifts, you can also earn Primordial items through combat in Season 3. These items come in two types: the already mentioned Primordial Uniques and Primordial Exalted. You can only equip one at a time (regardless of type).

    Primordial Uniques can enhance your combat effectiveness through powerful transformations, boosting your skill level or critical strike chance, or through other means. Primordial Exalted items can be crafted through the new Rune of Evolution.

    1. Void Knight

    Compared with the past, the mobility and effective HP of this Mastery class have been significantly improved through the adjustments brought by the season update, and the clearing ability and damage ability against bosses in battle are still very powerful, which also makes it still one of the most worthy Mastery classes in Last Epoch Season 2.

    In addition, after entering Season 2, all Void Knight’s skills have increased their damage effect by 200%, and they can also continue to cause damage to enemies while moving in the arena, allowing you to kill more enemies by outputting more DPS to quickly accumulate Last Epoch Gold, and making your gaming experience smoother.

    2. Paladin

    The strength of this Mastery class lies in the fact that it not only has an extremely outstanding Judgement skill, but also has good combat performance in other skills.     5. Shaman

    Shaman is a Mastery class that performs well in melee and elemental. Although its performance in damage, clearing and defense may not be as good as the best Paladin or Void Knight, it is still a Mastery worth choosing, especially if you are good at planning the arrangement and use of its skills.

    First of all, Tornado can provide enough damage output and vacuum effect, Aftershock idols can continue to add some extra damage, and Summon Storm Totem can act as bait when other better skills are on cooldown, while providing more damage.

    6. Druid

    If you choose to utilize this Mastery class, then Storm Werebear will be your most important skill.
